Antebellum Haymarket

Main Street Haymarket

1860 Demographic Chart for Haymarket Area

The information in the following chart is an attempt to provide a demographic "snap shot" of the greater Haymarket area in 1860. The 1860 Federal Census provides the following: the census enumeration number of the household (the order in which the house was visited by the census taker), the name and age of the head of household, the occupation of the head of household, the number of free people living in the household, and the total value of any estate owned by the head of household.

The parcel description and parcel name information came from either the 1857 or 1859 Prince William County Tax Lists. Occasionally one list was easier to read then another on the microfilm; whichever year was more legible is the one from which the information was taken. The 1858 Tax List was particularly difficult to see, so it was not used.  If there is no information from the tax lists, that indicates that the people living on the property are not listed as owning land in Prince William County and, therefore, are probably renting.

The 1860 Federal Slave Schedule provides a list of those who owned slaves and the number of slaves owned in 1860. On this chart, when more than one member of a household owned slaves, even someone within the household who was not the "head of household" on the census, that person has been listed on this chart in the head of household column. The value of their estate has also been listed on this chart, in order to get a better sense of who owned slaves in the Haymarket community and what their value may have been. Keep in mind that, although slaves may have been listed as being owned by someone, it does not necessarily mean that they lived with that individual since slaves often lived and/or worked away from their owners. So, although we can't be sure where the slaves were from the information on this table, we can get a sense of who in the community owned slaves and who didn't. Gathering the information from the 1869 Slave Schedule was very easy, thanks to Beverly Veness, local history reference librarian at Bull Run Regional Library's RELIC room. She transcribed and published the lists in RELIC's on-line magazine, The Reliquary. (Volume 3, numbers 2 and 3, in 2004)

Special thanks to Charlotte Reineck for painstakingly creating this chart and transferring the information from Excel sheets.
