The Old Post Office Building

Old Post Office

Circa - 1885

Located directly across from the Haymarket Museum at 15020 Washington Street.

The land for the Haymarket Post Office was purchased by George A. Hulfish in 1883 and the small weather-boarded, 2-story, gabled-ended structure was built  in 1885 and served as the Township Hall.

At the turn of the 20th century, it was purchased in 1916 by Mr. Albert Rust.  It was during Rust’s ownership that the building was first used as a drugstore. Historic documents refer to the building as “The Drugstore Property” when it was sold in 1932.  The drug store served as a social spot for all ages selling ice cream, sodas, milkshakes, sandwiches and sundries.

After longtime resident Doctor Beverly retired from the Haymarket Drug Store in 1945, its building was purchased by Mr. Cary Smith, who served Haymarket as the Town’s Postmaster from 1933-1959.  The building continued to serve as Town's Post Office until 1980.

When the Post Office relocated to Jefferson Street, the building housed the Red Rooster Antique Store, and in 2012 was restored and is now home to Washington Street Realty.  The original doors hang in the Haymarket Museum.
