General Election 2024

The Town of Haymarket will hold their local elections for Mayor and Town Council on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 along with the Presidential Election. 

If you would like to be a candidate and run for office, the deadline to submit your candidacy papers is on Primary Election Day, June 18, 2024 by 7 pm. The candidacy papers and qualification forms are available in Town Hall or below

 

Register to Vote - 

To be Eligible to Register to Vote in Virginia a Person must:

  • Be a resident of Virginia (a person who has come to Virginia for temporary purposes and intends to return to another state is not considered a resident for voting purposes).
  • Be a U. S. Citizen.
  • Be 18 years old (any person who is 17 years old and will be eighteen years of age at the next general election shall be permitted to register in advance and also vote in any intervening primary or special election).
  • Not be registered and plan to vote in another state.
  • Not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law.
  • If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored.

Become a Candidate - 

Candidates for office must meet certain qualifications and are required to file specific documents in order to qualify to appear on the ballot. These qualifications and requirements may vary slightly depending on whether the office sought is a local office, a general assembly seat, a statewide office, or a federal office. Generally, all candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Be qualified to vote for and hold the office sought, and
  • Be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election.
  • Be a resident of the city or town in which you are trying to run for office. 
  • Be a registered to vote in the city or town in which you are trying to run for office
